Course Content

Over the two days of course, outcrops and morphotectonic viewpoints in the Resende and Volta Redonda basins will be visited. Together with other Cenozoic basins (i.e., Curitiba; São Paulo; Taubaté; Itaboraí; Macacu) and some Quaternary grabens, they make up the sedimentary record of the Continental Rift of Southeastern Brazil. This impressive tectonic feature, approximately 900 km long and 70 km wide, is the product of five Cenozoic tectonic events (E1 event - NNW-SSE opening extension in the Paleogene; TS event- E-W sinistral strike-slip in the Miocene; TD event - E-W dextral strike-slip from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene; E2 event - NW-SE to E-W extension in the early Holocene; C event - current E-W compression), which reactivated pre-existing structures of the Neoproterozoic basement, conditioning the formation and deformation of these sedimentary basins. The knowledge of these Cenozoic tectonic events evolution is relevant due to the proximity of the Continental Rift of Southeastern Brazil to the offshore basins of Santos and Campos, with coincidences of variations in the pattern of sedimentary deposits preserved in the offshore basins, chronocorrelated with the Cenozoic tectonic events identified in the adjacent continental area.

Logistic:
Day 1 departure from Rio de Janeiro, at 08:00 (location to be determined), towards the
Resende basin to the points of the day.

Location: Resende Basin - Rodovia RJ-161 (road to Pedra Selada), km 1.5
Point 02 - Northern edge of the Resende Basin
Location: Av. Nissan, 1500D - Polo Industrial, Resende - RJ.
Point 03 - Rotated layers against the northern edge of the Resende Basin.
Location: Av. Nissan, 1500D - Polo Industrial, Resende - RJ.
Point 04 - Stratigraphic well in the Resende Basin
Location: Av. Nissan, 1500D - Polo Industrial, Resende - RJ.

Location: Resende Basin, RJ-163 road (to Visconde de Mauá), km 3
Overnight in Penedo, Itatiaia (RJ) - suggested hotels:

On Day 2, check out of the hotel at 07:30 and depart for the Volta Redonda basin, where
we will do the scheduled points in the morning and early afternoon.
Point 05 - “Ankaramito” (Casa de Pedra Basanite).
Location: Volta Redonda Basin - Road VRD-001, next to the Fernando Schmidt Municipal
Skate Gymnasium.
Point 06 - Siliciclastic reservoir analog, poorly consolidated and deformed.
Location: Volta Redonda Basin - Rodovia do Contorno, km 2.
Lunch in Paracambi (RJ) and return to Rio de Janeiro. Estimated arrival at 17:00.
Bathroom and lunch stops are planned at some of the many stops and restaurants along
the Presidente Dutra Highway (BR-116).

Who Should Attend: Geologists and Geophysicists working in Cenozoic tectonics, tectonosedimentation and geological modeling. However, it is not restrictive.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Structural  and Sedimentology
