Methods and Applications of Petroleum Geochemistry: Basin, Block, Reservoir Scales and Production
Sunday, 28 September – Monday, 29 September 2025, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. | Brazil
Course Content
This course will focus on the principles of organic geochemistry, including analytical methods and their applications to understand the elements of petroleum systems in different scales, from a regional assessment to production. Processes controlling organic matter deposition, preservation and transformation associated with anoxic environments will be discussed. Analytical techniques used for source rock, oil and gas characterization and their correlation will be addressed, contributing to the understanding of source rocks depositional environment, thermal evolution, petroleum migration and in-reservoir alteration processes. Reservoir compartmentalization and production allocation will also be discussed. The best geochemical approach contributing for every step of the E&P process will be highlighted, including unconventional resources.
Who Should Attend: These two days course (16h) is meant for exploration geologists and geophysicists, and also for reservoir geologists, geophysicists and engineers who lack a proper knowledge of the key contribution of petroleum geochemistry to better understand the processes of petroleum generation, migration, accumulation and production.
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge on petroleum geochemistry is required.
Instructor(s)
Luiz Antonio Freitas Trindade, PhD
Luiz is a geologist by Federal University of Bahia (1981), MSc by Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1988) and PhD by Stanford University (1992). Luiz joined Petrobras in 1982, where he has worked for 39 years, acting as research geochemist at CENPES for several years coordinating regional geochemical evaluation projects and reservoir geochemistry projects in Brazil and overseas. He has also occupied several managerial positions, including the Geochemistry team at CENPES, Petroleum Systems Modelling at Petrobras headquarters, Exploration Manager at Petrobras Argentina, South America Interpretation and Onshore Exploration Assets Other Countries. He has published dozens of articles, was a visiting professor at COPPE/UFRJ, has acted as advisor of several theses and as part of examination committees for MSc and PhD. Luiz has also taught several short courses at universities, petroleum companies and symposiums in Brazil and abroad. He is also a former president of the Latin American Association of Organic Geochemistry (ALAGO) and the Brazilian Geochemical Society (SBGq). At present, Luiz contributes as a visiting researcher at UFRJ/IQ/LADETEC and at Observatório Nacional.
