Beyond the presalt, back to turbidites: a Core workshop of Brazilian basins turbidites
Sunday, 28 September – Monday, 29 September 2025, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Brazil
Course Content
Major gas and oil discoveries have been made in the last 35 years in turbidites of the Central and South Atlantic, including Campos, Santos, Espírito Santo, Sergipe-Alagoas, Guyana, Suriname, Namibia and other basins. The study of modern and ancient deep-water systems, as addressed in this core workshop, provides an important complement to studies of outcrops and subsurface data: knowledge of the physiography at the time of deposition and its controls on deposition and facies associations, contextualization of rock data in well logs, seismic maps and sections, integration with petrophysical, petrological and seismic geomorphology data, and the linkage of these systems to the shallow water and continental updip associated deposits. The rich collection of geophysical and geological data (cores and well logs) from the Brazilian basins has provided a comprehensive and high quality characterization of the different ancient turbidite systems (Campos and Sergipe-Alagoas basins) and the Pleistocene Watu turbidite system of the Espírito Santo basin, allowing the integration of scales and the understanding of these systems and their reservoirs to serve as excellent analogues for the scales of reservoir geology and geophysics, as well as for the exploration scale.
Who Should Attend: Geologists and Geophysicists involved in reservoir or exploration interpretation.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy
Instructor(s)
Roberto Salvador F. d´Avila
Roberto is having bachelor’s degree in Geology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1985), master's and PhD degrees in Stratigraphy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and Unisinos universities (1999, 2009). Working at Petrobras since 1986, at E&P/Exploration Team as a manager for stratigraphy and exploration of different onshore and offshore basins, and as an internal senior consultant for sedimentology, stratigraphy and basin analysis. Fieldtrip leader for Itajaí, Sergipe-Alagoas, Recôncavo and Paraná basins (Brazil) and Neuquén Basin (Argentina).
Cizia Mara Hercos
Cizia is having bachelor’s degree in engineering Geology from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (1986), master's degree in Natural Science (Structural geology/Tectonics) from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (2008). Working at Petrobras since 1987, and at the Leopoldo Américo Miguez de Mello Research and Development Center since 2013. The areas of expertise are sedimentology, stratigraphy, marine quaternary geology and forward modelling.
Cizia Mara Hercos
Maria is having bachelor’s degree in Geology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (1996), master's degree in Geodynamics (Tectono-sedimentation) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (1999). Working at Petrobras since 2006, at E&P/Exploration Team of Sergipe-Alagoas Basin (2006-2016) and in CENPES (2016/at moment), as geologist specialist in sedimentology and petrology of different reservoirs (carbonate/siliciclastic) onshore and offshore basins. Fieldtrip leader for Aptian Fluvio-Deltaic-Turbidites systems of Sergipe-Alagoas Basin (Brazil).
Kayo Delorenzo Nardi Dias
Kayo is a geologist and master’s degree in aeolian systems from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Working at Petrobras exploration team since 2007, with sedimentology and stratigraphy in Aptian carbonate reservoirs (pre-salt and coquinas deposits) and turbidite sandstones in Campos basins. Internal consultant for deep water deposits and fieldtrip leader for turbidite deposits in Sergipe-Alagoas basin and for basin analisys in Paraná Basin.
