Welcome from the General Chair
On behalf of the Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologists (ABGP) and Petrobras, we welcome you to Rio de Janeiro for the AAPG International Conference & Exhibition (ICE) 2025.
This is the third edition of ICE in Brazil, and it comes at a strategic moment for Petrobras, Brazil and the energy sector, which is resuming exploratory activities after the pandemic, pursing new frontiers, and strengthening national production. I took part in previous editions in 1998 and 2009, and now, as General Chair, it is a great honor to contribute to bringing this globally relevant event back to Rio de Janeiro.
We expect ICE to be success in all its dimensions — technical, corporate, and academic — and to further highlight the value of geoscience, without which the oil and gas industry would not exist. After all, it was geoscience that led us to discover oil in Brazil, where few believed it was possible — and today, we are leaders in production. We must never doubt our potential: we need to study, invest in training, capacity building, and technological development. That is exactly what we are striving for; and ICE is a powerful platform to foster this progress.
ICE fosters meaningful collaboration among geoscientists, industry leaders, and policymakers from around the world and encourages open dialogue around the challenges and opportunities in energy, especially the balance between meeting global demand and advancing sustainability.
It also inspires innovation by sharing the latest technologies and research that can drive the energy transition forward. For Brazil and Petrobras, it is an opportunity to showcase our commitment to responsible energy development, to learn from others as we work toward a lower-carbon future and to inspire future generations to engage with our industry.
Something that has deeply motivated me about this edition of ICE is the magnificent work we are doing with our partner ABGP. We are sponsoring 130 geology and geophysics students from all over Brazil so they can attend the event and understand up close the strategic importance of the oil and gas industry — not only as a source of energy production but also as a driver of innovation and technological development in the country. We also are supporting the regional Student and Young Professional Leadership Summit, a 3-day program providing professional development for young leaders representing AAPG chapters in 11 countries.
We invite attendees of all ages to maximize their participation at ICE Rio 2025.
